You Have Permission to Pivot

Grief is normal. Even in the midst of grief, it is okay to move in a new direction. It is okay to pivot in order to focus on something new.

2020 is the curve ball year that a lot of us didn’t see coming. Many of us have had to make sudden decisions that we didn’t anticipate making. Schedules have changed, accommodations had to made, careers shifted, economically there have been ups and down’s and some of us have even dealt with personal loss.

In the midst of everything that has taken place, I believe we’ve been given a window to look through concerning our purpose and assignments. All over the world, in both corporate and personal settings, priorities have been shifted. We all have had to allot time to think about the changes in what we need to be focusing on.

Purpose has always been about the big picture as to why we are on the earth. The sobering thing is that God has always had a plan all along, even if we may not know exactly what it is. In times that seem uncertain, one thing that can give us hope is the knowledge that it is okay to grieve what we thought would happen. Grief is normal. On the same note, it is okay to move in a new direction. It is okay to pivot in order to focus on something new. To ‘pivot’ means to change your decisions or directions so that they are different than what they were before.

Purpose can be manifested in different assignments. Throughout our lives, we develop transferrable skills that God will highlight as seasons change. For example, you may have been working in corporate America as an accountant in an amazing firm. Suddenly the firm closes and it seems like no other doors are opening. It will take prayer for divine direction as to your next. However, it may be that God is pivoting you to use that ability to pay attention to detail to focus on your children’s needs. He may lead you to open up your own business to educate up and coming business owners on standard practices that aren’t widely known. The possibilities are endless.

God has given you authorization to be everything you need. You have permission! Every step we are called to take is by faith, and we are called to trust Him with every step. God doesn’t give permission without His character to back you up. He will be there every step of the way.

Many times, the place in which we find discouragement is if we actually have the permission to develop into something else. Evolution can be such a daunting thing, especially when we feel like there are factors that work against us, like our age, our past choices, if the choice to pivot even makes sense, or the fear of failing or the pivot going completely wrong!

Don’t lose hope even when things may seem uncertain. You have permission to evolve within your purpose. Your purpose will lead you into new relationships and new terrain, so allow yourself to embrace the changes that are going on.
